His eight children all became musicians, including several who became members of the Cleveland Orchestra. Samuel and Rebecca (Wolf) Luntz were Polish Jewish immigrants. Samuel founded the Canton Iron and Metal Company in 1898. Two of his sons, Darwin and Abe, founded their own scrap metal firm in 1916, The Luntz Iron and Steel Company, due to the growing need for scrap with the onset of World War I. Both Darwin and Abe were very involved in civic and community activities. Abe Luntz married Fanny Teplansky on October 10, 1916 in Canton, Ohio. They had five children. The family moved to Cleveland in 1939 for business purposes as well as for more varied religious, musical, and educational opportunities. The majority of the photographs included here pertain to Abe M. Luntz, his wife Fanny (Teplansky), their children, Robert, Richard, Joan, William, and Theodore, and their ancestors, both Luntz and Teplansky. It was incorporated in 1915 as the Electrical League of Cleveland Inc., a non-profit association of electrical companies. Founding members included George E. Miller of the Cleveland Electric Illuminating Company and J. Robert Crouse of the General Electric Company. Under the leadership of John E. (Jack) North, president from 1923 to 1949, the League's primary function was the promotion of electrical products and services available to consumers through its membership, which included electrical manufacturers, distributors, dealers, contractors, and key Cleveland Electric Illuminating Company employees. Educational programs, meetings, and trade shows sponsored by the League were designed to educate the public on the uses of electricity and to provide technical training and marketing techniques to League members. The League established collateral organizations, including the Electrical Maintenance Engineers Association, the Women's Division, and the Sight Saving Council of Cleveland, in order to bring its educational and promotional programs to targeted groups. By 1949, the League became primarily an industrial organization. In 1958, the League was reorganized as a trade association. Its name was changed in the 1980s to the Electrical League of Northern Ohio, Inc. This collection also contains substantial personal papers of John E. (Jack) North, documenting his career in the electrical industry. The collection consists of individual portraits of League directors, officers, and meeting speakers; group portraits of general membership and other meetings; and views of trade shows and fairs, events, trips, inspections, educational programs, social functions, and other League activities. Also includes photographs of activities and individuals of affiliated organizations, including the Electrical Maintenance Engineers Association. Photographs reflect League sales activities aimed at promoting the use of electrical appliances to consumers, as well as social events and outings. Of particular interest are photographs of classes and programs for women, designed to educate them about uses of electricity in the modern home, and depictions of early electrical consumer goods. Russell was raised in the Hungarian-American community of Cleveland's Buckeye Road neighborhood and published newspapers in that area, including the Buckeye Press. He was councilman from the 16th ward from 1943 to 1971 and operated several businesses, including the Ohio Fire Protection Systems. Russell began the Night in Budapest celebration in 1957, which commemorated the Hungarian Freedom Fighters of 1956 and highlighted Hungarian culture and Hungarian-Americans. The collection consists of photographs, slides, negatives, and films pertaining to the political career of Jack P. Russell. Included are photographs of Cleveland City Council, both individual portraits and views and including the City Council softball team, ca. 1940s-1960s; local Cleveland politicians, including Thomas A. | | | | Creator: | Stokes, Carl | | | | Dates: | 1940-1971 | | | | Abstract: | Carl Stokes (1927-1996) was the mayor of Cleveland, Ohio, from 1967-1971. Stokes was the first African American mayor of a major American city and the first African American Democrat in the Ohio State Legislature, where he served three terms from 1962-67. As mayor, Stokes launched a number of programs to alleviate the problems of urban decay. Chief among these was Cleveland: NOW!, a joint public and private program with plans to raise $177 million in its first two years to revitalize Cleveland. The program was discredited due to the Glenville Shootout in July, 1968. Under Stokes, Cleveland City Council passed the Equal Employment Opportunity Ordinance, and HUD resumed funding projects aiding in the construction of over 3,000 new low- and middle-income housing units. Stokes became a newscaster with NBC television in 1972, and returned to his law practice in Cleveland in 1980. In 1983, Stokes was elected a municipal court judge. The collection consists of formal individual portraits of Carl Stokes, individual and group portraits of the Stokes family and friends, city officials, local and national celebrities and political figures, and individual citizens. It also includes candid and formal group portraits and views of official functions of the mayor, functions of individual city departments and commissions, and local community groups. Included are portraits of Hubert H. Humphrey, Edmund Muskie, Rev. Billy Graham, Pope Paul VI, entertainers Bob Hope and Bill Cosby, and Congressmen Charles Vanik and Louis Stokes. It began producing automotive parts and underwent several reorganizations, becoming the Electric Welding Products Company (1908), the Steel Products Company (1915), and Thompson Products Inc. (1926). It expanded to include branch plants and the production of aircraft parts, and fostered a company union, the Automotive and Aircraft Workers Alliance (later the Aircraft Workers Alliance). It grew during World War II due to defense contracts. After the war it entered the jet and aerospace industries. It merged in 1958 with Ramo Wooldridge Corporation to become TRW Inc. Outside activities include the National Air Races and the Crawford Auto-Aviation Collection of the Western Reserve Historical Society. The collection consists of individual aircraft; reciprocating, jet, and rocket aviation power plants; personalities; famous flights; and miscellaneous images related to all aspects of aviation history through the mid-1960s. The collection represents the history and development of aviation airframe and power plant technology. Over 200 aircraft manufacturing types and over 100 power plant manufacturing types are represented, including numerous images of Curtiss and Wright aircraft, as well as many lesser known manufacturing types. The collection also contains many images of dirigibles, blimps, and balloons. | | | | Creator: | Gray, A. Donald | | | | Dates: | 1922-1939 | | | | Abstract: | A. Donald Gray (1891-1939) was a landscape architect and designer in Cleveland, Ohio, from 1920-1939. Gray worked briefly with Frederick Law Olmsted, Jr., in Brookline, Massachusetts, before establishing a landscape architecture practice in Cleveland. He designed many private gardens and estates for some of the most elite families of Cleveland and its outlying suburbs, including the noted private development of Fairhill Rd. houses in 1931. Gray was also the landscape designer for several public projects, including the Cedar-Central apartments, the first federal public-housing project in the nation, and many of Cleveland's public parks. Perhaps his most notable achievement was the creation of the WPA-funded Horticultural Gardens for the Great Lakes Exposition, 1936-1937, some of which remain on the site north of Cleveland's Municipal Stadium. The gardens were named for Gray as a memorial after his death. Gray took several trips to England, South America, Mexico and elsewhere throughout his career to study the landscaping of great houses and public places. He also contributed a regular gardening column to the Cleveland Press during the mid-1930s. The collection consists of individual and group portraits of A. Donald Gray, his friends and business associates; views of his landscaping projects; scenes from the Great Lakes Exposition, and vacation photographs. | | | | Creator: | Lockwood, George D. Family | | | | Dates: | 1855-1950 | | | | Abstract: | Stanley G. Lockwood moved from Connecticut to Painesville, Ohio, where he opened a general store, in 1835. His sons, George D. and John S., continued the firm. In 1856 George moved to Davenport, Iowa and opened another store, Livingston and Lockwood. During the American Civil War he was an officer in Companies D and I of the 7th Ohio Volunteer Infantry Regiment. His brother, Stanley B., served in Company G. of the 2nd Ohio Volunteer Cavalry Regiment and in Company K of the 105th Ohio Volunteer Infantry Regiment. The collection consists of individual and group portraits of various members of the Lockwood and related families. The collection consists of photographs depicting Scott, his friends and associates, and his travels connected to his studies of United States military preparedness.
